The Ferrari 212 Inter chassis 0145E by Ghia.
The Ferrari 212 Inter chassis 0145E and the 0199EL are among the rarest examples of coachbuilt coupes, crafted by Carrozzeria Ghia in lightweight, all-aluminum bodies. These bespoke creations exemplify the revival of pre-war traditions in custom coachwork, which saw a resurgence in the early post-war years thanks to Ferrari and other prestigious marques fostering innovative designs from Italy’s established carrossiers. Carrozzeria Ghia, founded over a century ago in Turin in 1916 by Giacinto Ghia, experienced a renaissance in the 1950s and 1960s. This period of artistic and engineering creativity continued into the 1970s following its acquisition by the Ford Motor Company. Even in recent times, Ghia’s legacy persisted with Ford using the brand for its premium models in the UK as late as 2010, showcasing its enduring influence on automotive design. The Ferrari 212 Inter Alloy Coupe by Ghia is a masterpiece of elegance, characterized by a distinctive large open-mouth grille and a sleek fastback profile accentuated by rounded quarter windows. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, the lightweight Inter chassis offered impressive performance, blending luxurious comfort with exhilarating speed. According to Ferrari historian Marcel Massini’s meticulous research, chassis 0145E was meticulously handcrafted at Ferrari’s workshop in collaboration with Ghia during the summer and early fall of 1951. Engine assembly supervised by engineer Luigi Bazzi took place in July 1951, followed by rigorous testing of the rear axle, gearbox, and dyno by Ferrari foreman Amos Franchini in the subsequent months. The factory test drive occurred on September 6, 1951, marking the completion of this exceptional Ferrari, which remains adorned in its original striking Silver Blue (Azzuro) metallic exterior color. The culmination of this craftsmanship was showcased at the prestigious Torino Motor Show in late April and early May of 1952, where Carrozzeria Ghia proudly presented chassis 0145E to the world. This event underscored not only the technical mastery and artistry of Ghia but also Ferrari’s commitment to blending performance with bespoke luxury, setting a standard that continues to inspire automotive enthusiasts and collectors alike.
