Vehicle Overview

The Ferrari 212 Export Touring Chassis 0088E is a significant vehicle with a long history of racing and ownership. Produced in 1951, this Right-Hand Drive model features a body by Touring and was equipped with a Colombo V12 engine, internal number 16/E, and gearbox number 20/E. In April 1951, the car was owned by Augusto Caraceni of Rome, Italy. It participated in the Stella Alpina Hillclimb in August 1951, where it achieved 5th overall and 2nd in GT+2.0 class. In 1952, ownership passed to Conte Antonio Naselli, and the car competed in the Stella Alpina Hillclimb again but did not finish. In 1953, the car raced in the XII. Giro di Sicilia and the Coppa della Toscana, finishing 76th overall and 7th in GT+2.0 class. Ownership continued to change hands over the years, with various Italian owners such as Dino Vaselli and Giampaolo Terigi in 1954, followed by Roberto Federici and Rosetta Maiavacca in the following years. The car was used in various races, demonstrating Ferrari’s enduring performance. In 1962, the car was imported to the United States by Michele Vernola. Lowell Musick of Long Beach, California, became the owner in 1963, followed by Charles Betz and Fred Peters of Orange, California, in 1969. In 2008, the car underwent a full restoration. It was disassembled and prepared by Steve Beckman’s Metalworks in Costa Mesa, California. The original engine was balanced and blueprinted by Bob Wallace, and a limited-slip differential was installed for improved performance. The car was repainted in its original Amaranto color, and components like the wheels, brightwork, and instruments were restored by specialists. In January 2016, the car was sold at the Bonhams’ Scottsdale Auction for $3.19 million (€2,346,105), including the buyer’s premium. It continued to participate in prestigious events, including the Pebble Beach Concours in August 2017, where it placed 3rd in Class M2. It also participated in the Tour Auto in 2015, the Monaco Historic GP in 2018, and the Goodwood Revival in the same year.
