The Ferrari 212 Export Carretto Siciliano chassis 0086E.
The Ferrari 212 Export chassis 0086E is best known for its extraordinary “Carretto Siciliano” body, a one-of-a-kind creation that blended high-performance racing with an artistic and cultural statement. Commissioned by the Marzotto brothers and built by Carrozzeria Paolo Fontana, this unique Ferrari was designed to stand out both on and off the track. Inspired by the traditional Sicilian donkey carts—elaborately decorated wooden wagons adorned with bright colors and intricate patterns—the Carretto Siciliano Ferrari was a bold expression of Italian heritage. Fontana crafted a lightweight spyder body with exaggerated, almost theatrical styling. The car featured hand-painted decorations, intricate motifs, and striking colors, making it an eye-catching spectacle in the racing world. Beyond its appearance, 0086E was a serious competition machine. It debuted in the 1951 Giro di Sicilia, where it was driven to overall victory by Vittorio Marzotto and Paolo Fontana. Despite its unconventional looks, the car proved itself on the grueling Sicilian roads, defeating more traditional racing Ferraris and other top contenders. However, the Carretto Siciliano body was short-lived. By mid-1951, the car was stripped of its decorative spyder form and rebodied as a more conventional Vignale 212 Export Spyder, likely to enhance its competitiveness in future races. The Ferrari 212 Export “Carretto Siciliano” remains one of the most flamboyant and artistic expressions of Ferrari racing history. It was a car that merged culture, craftsmanship, and performance in a way that no other Ferrari had before or since. Though its body lasted only a short time, its legacy as an audacious mix of racing prowess and artistic flair continues to captivate Ferrari enthusiasts today.
