Vehicle Overview

The Ferrari 166 S Berlinetta Colli, chassis number 003S, is a fascinating and storied car with a rich racing history that spans the late 1940s and into the later years as it underwent a remarkable rebirth. Initially built as a Ferrari 166 C Allemano Berlinetta in April 1948, it was equipped with a 2-carburetor Weber 32 DCF engine and was originally finished in red. Its racing career quickly took off, with notable performances in prestigious events like the Mille Miglia and GP Stockholm. In May 1948, the car, driven by Clemente Biondetti and Giuseppe Navone, claimed 1st Overall at the Mille Miglia, completing the course with an impressive time of 6 hours, 2 minutes in Rome and 15 hours, 5 minutes in Brescia, averaging 121.227 km/h. This victory solidified its place in Ferrari racing lore. Later that same month, the car also won the GP Stockholm at Sharpnäck, further cementing its competitive pedigree. After these triumphs, the car was involved in several more racing events, including a second-place finish at the Bolzano-Mendola Hillclimb in July 1948, but it also had its share of setbacks. A crash at the Coppa d’Oro delle Dolomiti and later an accident at the Coppa Gallenga, Vermicino-Rocca di Papa Hillclimb led to the car being repainted grey in 1949. Despite the setbacks, the Ferrari 166 S continued to race, including at the Giro di Sicilia and Mille Miglia in 1949, where it again showed strong performances. By 1950, it finished 4th overall and 3rd in the S2.0 class at Coppa InterEuropa, Monza. It was also involved in races like Circuito di Pescara and Vila Real, and it remained a regular competitor for Giampiero Bianchetti. However, a road accident in the early 1950s led to a significant turning point for the car. After the accident, the car was completely rebuilt by Carrozzeria Colli of Milan and repainted in dark red. The rebuild gave the car a fresh lease on life, but its racing days were soon over. It eventually passed through the hands of various owners, including Luigi Musso, Pizzagalli, and possibly others, before it was tragically crashed once again, leading to its scrapping. The engine and gearbox of 003S were then transplanted into chassis 0205EL, and it is believed that 003S’s engine may have later found its way into chassis 0048M around 1999. In 1995, DK Engineering offered the car, which may have been a mix of chassis 0205EL and engine 003S. The fascinating story of the Ferrari 166 S Berlinetta Colli speaks to both the endurance of these machines and the evolving history of Ferrari’s racing heritage. Though the original body of 003S was lost, the engine continues to be a part of Ferrari’s legacy today, preserving the history of this once-glorious racing car.
