Vehicle Overview
The Ferrari 166 MM Spider Campana chassis 0072E is another iconic car in Ferrari’s history, known for its impressive performances in various races and its evolving bodywork. Initially a 166 Export Vignale Spyder, the car was built as a Right-Hand Drive (RHD) model and soon became a notable competitor in the early 1950s. In 1951, Alberico Cacciari of Milan was one of the car’s primary drivers. The car’s first major event came at the Mille Miglia in April 1951, where it finished 90th Overall and 7th in the S2.0 class. Cacciari teamed up with Yvonne Simon for this grueling race, where they managed a respectable position despite the challenging conditions. The car’s participation in such a prestigious event was a sign of things to come, but it wasn’t without its mechanical struggles. Later that year, the car competed in the Rallye du Maroc in May 1951, where it finished 19th Overall, driving alongside Michel Kasse. Following these races, the car underwent a significant transformation. It was rebodied by Carrozzeria Campana into a Spyder Corsa. This rebodied version carried more aggressive styling, in line with Ferrari’s competition-focused designs. In July 1951, the car entered the Coppa d’Oro Delle Dolomiti, but its performance was cut short by mechanical failure when the car left the road due to brake issues, resulting in a Did Not Finish (DNF). The following month, it participated in the Coppa Adriatica at the Circuito di Senigallia, where Alberico Cacciari finished 7th Overall and 7th in the S+1.1 class, showing the car’s potential despite its earlier mechanical problems. The car also saw action in 1952, when it competed in the Coppa della Toscana, finishing 4th in the S2.0 class and 29th Overall. It continued its racing career with Cacciari behind the wheel, including an event at the Circuito di Senigallia in August 1952, where the car placed 5th Overall despite some issues. In September 1952, it raced in the Grand Prix Bari, where Cacciari drove it to 8th Overall and 3rd in the S2.0 class, once again proving its racing pedigree. Later on, the car was again rebodied, this time by Vignale, and the styling now resembled the 340 Mexico Spyder (chassis 0228AT), with two distinct ovoid portholes added to the fenders, giving it a fresh look for further competition. The Ferrari 166 MM Spider Campana, chassis 0072E, thus had a storied racing history, constantly evolving in both performance and aesthetics, and leaving its mark in some of the most iconic events of its era.
