There were eight 166 Inters built by Vignale. Ferrari made its debut in 1947 with the Tipo 125S and started business by offering its cars for sale to the public. In the following year, this car had a major evolution to become the famous 166 series. The 166 Inter is a Grand Touring road car and many famous coachbuilders in Italy have created special elegant bodies on its running chassis. One of the most well known of its kind is this 166 Inter Coupe by Vignale. Vignale is the name of the famed carrozzeria (coachbuilder) Alfredo Vignale. The design of this coupe was the collaboration of Alfredo and the up and coming stylist of the time, Giovanni Michelotti. Together they made many special bodies for Ferrari and these cars were loved by connoisseurs, as they continue to be to this day. Chassis 0062M was the first Ferrari ever built by Vignale.

Like Vignale, Enzo Ferrari had founded his small factory based in Maranello in 1946 and had come into contact with the Turin coachbuilder through Franco Cornacchia, well-known owner of Scuderia Guastalla and trustee of the Cavallino brand in Milan. The two manufacturers were united by some peculiar personal characteristics, which saw them both excel in the exasperated dedication to their work.
