The Ferrari 166 Inter Spider Bertone Chassis chassis 057S.
The Ferrari 166 Inter Spider Bertone chassis 057S is a truly iconic piece of Ferrari history. This car, originally designed by Giovanni Michelotti and built by Carrozzeria Bertone, captures the essence of Ferrari’s early days, blending elegance with the sportiness that became synonymous with the brand. Chassis 057S was completed in 1950, finished in a striking medium blue with a right-hand drive configuration. It was first shown at the 1951 Torino Auto Show, where it immediately caught the eye of car enthusiasts and collectors. The car’s stylish design was further highlighted when it served as the safety car for the GP Vetturette at the 1951 Italian Grand Prix in Monza, a testament to its blend of beauty and practicality. In the same year, it was also featured at the A.I.C.A.R. event in Milan. By 1957, the Ferrari 166 had moved to Germany, where it became part of the inventory at Auto Becker in Düsseldorf. Over time, the car underwent some changes, including a repaint to a brown color, and the engine was replaced with unit #0201EL. However, the original engine was kept with the car, adding to its intriguing history. Ownership of chassis 057S changed hands multiple times throughout the years. In the 1960s, it was owned by Wolfgang Kasper, who offered it for sale in a German car magazine in 1965. The car was described as a Ferrari Cabriolet with new paint, fresh interior, and a non-working engine, priced at DM 3,300. From there, it passed through the hands of several other collectors, including Erich Doerflinger and Peter Wellenstein, before landing with Kurt Gaensdorfer in Karlsruhe, Germany. Gaensdorfer started restoring the car, but after his passing in 1999, the car became involved in a legal dispute, delaying the completion of its restoration.
