De Tomaso Pantera 2000
The De Tomaso Pantera 2000 mock-up by Marcello Gandini.
Vehicle Overview
The De Tomaso Pantera 2000 made its debut as a mock-up on September 5, 1999, during the 40th anniversary celebrations of De Tomaso. This event marked the presentation of the last car overseen by Alejandro De Tomaso himself. Designed by Marcello Gandini, the Pantera 2000 was envisioned as a futuristic concept car aimed at redefining De Tomaso’s iconic Pantera model for the new millennium. Marcello Gandini’s design for the Pantera 2000 was striking and innovative, reflecting both luxury and high-performance characteristics expected from a supercar. It was intended not only as a tribute to the original Pantera but also as a forward-looking interpretation of automotive design trends of the time. However, despite its impressive debut and conceptual appeal, the Pantera 2000 remained as just a model and did not progress beyond the mock-up stage. Following its unveiling at the anniversary celebration, the Pantera 2000 did not receive substantial further attention from the press or the automotive industry. Interestingly, despite its limited public exposure, the design of the Pantera 2000 is noted to have potentially influenced the later design concepts seen in vehicles like the Bugatti Veyron, showcasing its visionary elements ahead of its time. After the closure of De Tomaso in 2004, the Pantera 2000 found a new home in the Panini Collection located in Modena. For years, it remained a part of this prestigious collection, a testament to its significance in automotive design history. Recently, the Pantera 2000 was acquired by its current owner, ensuring that this unique piece of automotive conceptual art continues to be preserved and appreciated. In conclusion, while the De Tomaso Pantera 2000 never advanced beyond the prototype stage, its design by Marcello Gandini and its association with De Tomaso’s storied history make it a notable and cherished artifact in the world of automotive design and collector cars.
