The De Tomaso Competizione 2000 concept racing car.
The De Tomaso 2000 Competizione is a distinctive and rare concept racing car that epitomizes mid-1960s Italian automotive innovation. Built by Carrozzeria Ghia, this one-of-a-kind vehicle was based on the chassis of the De Tomaso Vallelunga and unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 1966, where it garnered significant attention for its cutting-edge design and engineering. The 2000 Competizione was powered by a modified 1.6-liter four-cylinder Ford 120E engine, derived from the 104-horsepower powertrain of the De Tomaso Vallelunga. This engine provided a balance of performance and reliability crucial for racing applications. The car’s transmission, sourced from Volkswagen, was equipped with Colotti ratios and featured a four-speed layout, designed to complement the vehicle’s sporty character. The suspension system of the 2000 Competizione was notably advanced for its time, incorporating overlapping triangles and coil springs at all four corners, with struts from Triumph. This setup was aimed at delivering both handling precision and ride comfort, essential for competitive racing. Initially, the De Tomaso 2000 Competizione was fitted with 13-inch wheels, but De Tomaso later upgraded these to 15-inch wheels, similar to those used on the 2000 Sport model, to enhance performance and stability. The car remained in De Tomaso’s possession until 2004, when it was sold to a private collector. The new owner undertook a comprehensive restoration, meticulously returning the vehicle to its original glory while preserving its unique characteristics and historical significance. Today, the De Tomaso 2000 Competizione is celebrated for its innovative design, engineering excellence, and its place in the history of Italian automotive craftsmanship. Its journey from concept to restoration reflects both its pioneering role in racing car design and its continued appeal among collectors and enthusiasts.
