Daihatsu Sport Vignale
The Daihatsu Sport Vignale concept car.
Vehicle Overview
The Daihatsu Sport Vignale was a standout concept unveiled at the 1963 Turin Motor Show, designed to showcase the emerging capabilities of the Japanese automobile industry on a global stage. This collaboration between Daihatsu and the renowned Italian coachbuilder Vignale was a bold move, blending Italian design sophistication with Japanese engineering precision. Italian coachbuilder Alfredo Viale, an early collaborator with Japanese manufacturers, played a key role in this partnership. The result was two stunning prototypes; a coupe and a convertible crafted at Vignale’s workshop and based on the Daihatsu Sport. Both were powered by an 800 cc inline 4-cylinder water-cooled engine that delivered an impressive 50 horsepower. These prototypes embodied a unique fusion of Italian flair and Japanese simplicity, with a design that subtly echoed the elegance of the Ferrari 250 GT Lusso, giving the car a timeless charm. At the Daihatsu booth during the show, European attendees, many of whom had never encountered a Japanese car before, were drawn to the sleek and innovative prototypes. The Daihatsu Sport Vignale became a symbol of Japan’s growing potential in the global automotive market. Daihatsu’s foray into Europe was groundbreaking; becoming the first Japanese car manufacturer to sell vehicles in the UK. This strategic move laid the groundwork for their rapid sales growth and solidified their reputation as a forward-thinking automaker. Though the Daihatsu Sport Vignale remained a prototype, its influence extended beyond the show floor. Elements of its design and engineering found their way into subsequent Daihatsu models destined for Europe, showcasing the concept’s lasting impact. The original prototype has its own fascinating history, having been preserved by a collector in Monaco for decades before being acquired by the Daihatsu Museum in Osaka, where it is now proudly displayed in excellent condition.
