Daewoo Nubira Hatchback

The Daewoo Nubira Hatchback designed by I.DE.A. Institute.

Vehicle Overview

The Daewoo Nubira Hatchback marked the beginning of a new era for the Korean brand, initiating the development of its first generation in 1994 under the J100 project. Daewoo, amidst a period of significant transformation, aimed to launch a range of modern and appealing vehicles to conquer global markets. The Nubira, designed in Italy by I.DE.A. Institute for the compact sedan segment, aimed to replace the aging Daewoo Nexia, which was based on the Opel Kadett. Led by Ulrich Bez and with contributions from Ricardo and Holden, Daewoo developed a new front-wheel-drive platform. The engines in the lineup, supplied by GM and already in use on other Daewoo models, powered the Nubira. After a development period lasting 30 months, the vehicle was officially unveiled at the Seoul Motor Show in 1997, with production commencing at the Gunsan plant. In May of the same year, the Nubira made its European debut in various body styles, including the hatchback version, during an event in Barcelona. Initially offered in South Korea with a 1.5-liter engine producing 110 horsepower, the Nubira also featured a top-of-the-line 1.8-liter engine with 136 horsepower. In Europe, the lineup included engines such as the 1.6-liter with 106 horsepower and the 2.0-liter with 133 horsepower. Despite a lukewarm reception in the European market, the Nubira faced criticism for its perceived low-quality interiors. However, it was appreciated for the versatility of its cabin, especially in the wagon version, which garnered more success in terms of sales in Europe. With the Daewoo Nubira Hatchback, the Korean brand aimed to conquer new markets and redefine standards in the compact sedan segment.
