Coggiola Janus
The Coggiola Janus concept car.
Vehicle Overview
The Coggiola Janus prototype was a unique “two-faced” design concept, with asymmetrically designed sections starting at the mid-point of the body, showcasing two distinct design possibilities on either side. Named after the Roman god Janus, who is often depicted with two faces looking in opposite directions, this innovative prototype reflected Coggiola’s creative approach to automotive design. The Janus was intended for production and featured the highly refined surface treatment that was a hallmark of many Coggiola-built vehicles. As a mock-up model, the clay body of the Janus was sliced in half down the middle, and mirrors were strategically placed to create the illusion of a complete vehicle, allowing designers to present two distinct design proposals simultaneously. The concept behind this asymmetry was to explore different styling possibilities in a single prototype, with each side offering contrasting visual themes. The right side of the vehicle lacked a graphic finish and featured a distinct window design without a door handle or fuel tank lid, both of which were present on the opposite side. The contrasting designs emphasized the different aesthetic choices under consideration, allowing viewers to compare potential options in one model. This approach highlighted Coggiola’s innovative thinking and desire to push the boundaries of conventional automotive design. Ultimately, the Coggiola Janus prototype embodied the forward-thinking nature of the company, showcasing their ability to experiment with form and function in unique ways. By presenting two competing design ideas in one car, the Janus demonstrated Coggiola’s dedication to exploring diverse stylistic directions while maintaining the quality and refinement of their surface treatments. While it remained a concept, the Janus continues to be remembered for its bold and creative approach to automotive prototyping.
