Cisitalia DF85

The Cisitalia DF85 designed by Carrozzeria Fissore.

Vehicle Overview

The Cisitalia DF85 is a fascinating piece of automotive history, representing a blend of Italian design, racing heritage, and post-war ingenuity. Cisitalia, originally founded in 1939 by Piero Duso as Consorzio Industriale Sportiva Italia, initially focused on sporting goods. However, after World War II, the company shifted gears toward automotive manufacturing, particularly racing cars powered by Fiat engines, under the Cisitalia name. By 1947, they had expanded into producing passenger cars, establishing themselves in the realm of Italian sports cars. In 1960, Duso commissioned around 50 units of a special Fiat 1500 Coupé, styled by the renowned coachbuilder Fissore, to be sold under the Cisitalia brand in Argentina. The DF85 model, which emerged from this collaboration, was powered by a 1,491 cc twin overhead cam (TOHC) engine designed by OSCA, a company founded by the Maserati brothers. The “DF” in the name stands for “Derivazione Fiat” (Fiat derivative), clearly indicating its Fiat roots. While the mechanicals and basic design were Fiat-based, the modifications by OSCA and the stylish bodywork by Fissore gave the DF85 its distinct character. Visually, the DF85 closely resembles other Fissore-designed coupes from the era, with only minor differences in interior trim and, of course, the Cisitalia badging. This isn’t a drawback, though, as the car’s Italian styling is elegant, with the flowing lines typical of late 1950s and early 1960s automotive design. Inside, the Cisitalia DF85 is a treat, featuring a beautifully detailed interior reminiscent of a scaled-down Maserati 5000GT. The large, widely spaced dials, the wood-rimmed steering wheel adorned with the Cisitalia crest, and the delicate chrome detailing on the glovebox and trunk handles all contribute to an atmosphere of refined luxury. Despite being a rarity, one of these examples was sold by Bonhams in 2010 for $35,100, underscoring its value and appeal as a collectible. The Fiat-OSCA engine adds a layer of performance that makes this car a rewarding drive, with plenty of character and a smooth power delivery.
