The Caterham Project V by Italdesign.
The Caterham Project V, a striking new design by Chief Designer Anthony Jannarelly, marks an exciting era for Caterham as it ventures beyond its traditional models. Originally envisioned as a fully electric coupé, Project V will also be available with an alternative powertrain: a Yamaha combustion engine, ensuring that Caterham remains attractive to purists who desire the visceral sound and experience of a traditional engine. Project V’s bold new design language reimagines the brand’s traditionally minimalist styling, introducing sleek, dynamic lines that set it apart from Caterham’s classic models. Yet, it maintains Caterham’s DNA of lightweight engineering and driving purity. Built in collaboration with Italdesign at their renowned facilities in Italy, this partnership with Caterham and Jannarelly showcases Italdesign’s expertise in translating innovative concepts into production-ready vehicles, promising a seamless path from prototype to commercial model. Andrea Porta, Business Development Manager at Italdesign, emphasized the smooth synergy, noting that Italdesign applied its extensive experience in developing concept cars, ensuring that Project V’s journey to the market will be both swift and efficient. With a targeted kerb weight of just 1,190 kg, Project V embodies Caterham’s commitment to lightweight performance. The ultra-light design is achieved through an innovative blend of carbon fiber and aluminum, allowing for a responsive and agile driving experience that aligns with the demands of a sports car. Inside, the car offers a thoughtful 2+1 seating configuration, balancing the practicality of additional seating with a sports-focused design. Under the hood, the electric variant of Project V is powered by a 200 kW (272 PS) single motor positioned on the rear axle, delivering both immediate torque and smooth, responsive acceleration. A 55 kWh USOC lithium-ion battery pack with advanced thermal management supports this performance, allowing rapid charging from 20% to 80% in just 15 minutes with a 150 kW DC charger. Performance specs are impressive, with Project V achieving 0-62 mph in under 4.5 seconds and reaching a top speed of 143 mph (230 kph). Its WLTP range target of 249 miles (400 km) ensures that the car provides not only exhilarating performance but also practical, everyday usability, catering to both driving enthusiasts and eco-conscious consumers alike. With the added option of a Yamaha combustion engine, Project V opens up to a broader range of sports car enthusiasts, satisfying the brand’s loyal followers and inviting new fans. The hybrid lineup of electric and combustion options will allow Caterham to remain true to its heritage of thrilling, driver-focused vehicles while staying adaptable to the changing automotive landscape.

The Caterham Project V has not yet been unveiled, but there is one interesting detail about the British marque’s next coupé: it will not be produced in the UK, but in Italy. It was Italdesign, the Turin-based company founded by the famous designer Giorgetto Giugiaro and now owned by the Volkswagen group, that revealed the production location in a brief press release detailing the collaboration between the two companies.
