Bertone Freeclimber

The Bertone Freeclimber, Nuccio’s desire to create a 4×4.

Vehicle Overview

The Bertone Freeclimber is the result of Nuccio Bertone‘s desire to try his hand at a 4×4. The aim was to sound out the market for top of the range four wheel drives, with a new product sold under the Bertone marque. With mechanical components by Daihatsu, a BMW engine and a Bertone body, the Freeclimber is an off-roader with essential, smooth lines and a well-balanced body shape. The interior stands out for its polished, stylish trimmings and sumptuous fittings. The engines fitted in the Freeclimber, all six cylinder, are the 2443 cc BMW turbodiesel, and two petrol engines, also from the German producer, at 1991 cc. and 2693 cc. 2795 units of the first version of the Bertone Freeclimber were produced, from 1989 to 1992. The Bertone Freeclimber is a version of the Daihatsu Rocky F75 built by the Turin coachbuilder, slightly restyled and with BMW engines, which was also used in Italy by the Carabinieri Corps. The bodywork was almost identical to that of the Japanese off-roader: what changed was the faceplate, equipped with four round headlights, and the light alloy wheels. The interior was also very similar to that of the Rocky: very few details and logos changed, which, of course, were Bertone. It was marketed with metal top or cabriolet bodywork (equipped with hard-top). Suspension was rear and front with a rigid axle. Drive was rear with the front insertable and reducer. In 1992, Bertone released the Freeclimber 2, a slightly restyled version.
