Aston Martin DB2/4 Roadster

The Aston Martin DB2/4 Roadster by Touring.

Vehicle Overview

The Aston Martin DB2/4 Roadster, built by Carrozzeria Touring in Milan, is one of the rarest and most exclusive Aston Martins ever made, with only three specimens produced. Unveiled at the 1956 Turin Auto Show, this exquisite roadster was based on the Aston Martin DB2/4 Mk II, a model introduced in 1955 that featured significant upgrades over its predecessor. The Mk II offered an optional high-performance engine with large valves and high compression (8.6:1), producing 165 hp (123 kW). This engine was designed for enthusiasts seeking a blend of elegance and power. The Mk II also received several stylistic updates, including the addition of small tailfins, bubble-type tail lights borrowed from the Morris Minor, and extra chrome details that enhanced its visual appeal. A notable change was the redesign of the bonnet’s horizontal split line, which was moved from door sill height to a more elegant line extending from the top of the front wheel arch, giving the car a sleeker, more aerodynamic appearance. A new 2-seat Fixed Head Coupé (FHC) was introduced alongside the continued Drophead, with 34 of the 199 Mk II models featuring this new coupé body, a style personally chosen by David Brown, the owner of Aston Martin, for his own car. Three of the Mk II chassis were dispatched to Carrozzeria Touring in Italy, where they were transformed into Spider models. These unique roadsters embodied Italian design flair combined with British engineering, resulting in a stunning collaboration that set them apart from other Aston Martins of the era. The Touring-bodied Spider was celebrated for its sleek and refined appearance, capturing the attention of automotive enthusiasts and judges alike. It achieved notable recognition by winning the category prize at the 1956 Concorso d’Eleganza Campione d’Italia, solidifying its place in automotive history. Touring’s work on the DB2/4 Roadster not only showcased their exceptional craftsmanship but also paved the way for future collaborations with Aston Martin. This partnership would later play a crucial role in the development of the Superleggera design for the iconic DB4, marking the beginning of a new era of Aston Martin’s design language. The DB2/4 Roadster remains a rare and highly sought-after collector’s piece, symbolizing the union of British heritage and Italian artistry.
