Arnolt-Bristol 404X Coupé

The Arnolt-Bristol 404X Coupé Bertone designed by Scaglione.

Vehicle Overview

The Arnolt-Bristol 404X Coupé, designed by Franco Scaglione for Carrozzeria Bertone, stands as a symbol of collaboration between American entrepreneur Stanley H. “Wacky” Arnolt and Italian craftsmanship. Initially conceived as a Spider, only six specimens were produced. The genesis of the Arnolt-Bristol can be traced back to Stanley H. Arnolt’s venture, S.H. Arnolt Inc., based in Chicago, Illinois, which imported European sports cars post-World War II, including Aston Martin, MG, and Bristol. In 1953, Arnolt entered into a partnership with Italian coachbuilder Bertone. Bertone, on Arnolt’s behalf, produced the Arnolt Continental Sportster, a two-door sports car offered in coupé and open versions. Utilizing the platform of the MG-TD Roadster from the British Motor Corporation, Bertone crafted a modern pontoon body designed by Giovanni Michelotti. Originally, 200 units were planned, but only 103 were produced due to MG discontinuing chassis supply in early 1954. Following the cessation of MG-Arnolt production, Arnolt sought to develop a successor with a similar concept: British drivetrain with Italian bodywork. Through Bristol’s sales manager James Watt, Arnolt opted for the chassis of the Bristol 404, introduced in 1953 as a luxurious sports car associated with the term “Gentleman’s Express” for the first time. Bertone once again undertook the body design and assembly. Arnolt, who had previously invested significantly in Bertone’s facility for Arnolt-MG production, became its vice president. The Arnolt-Bristol, like its predecessor, primarily targeted the American market, offered at a lower price point compared to the standard Bristol 404 due to cost-effective Italian bodywork production and technical modifications. Consequently, it found limited buyers in Europe, primarily being sold in the United States. Though a few Arnolt-Bristol units were utilized in motor racing, no direct successor followed. The Coupé variant, being the heaviest and most expensive, represented the pinnacle of Arnolt-Bristol’s lineup, encapsulating the blend of British engineering and Italian design that characterized the marque.
