Zagato designed small 2+2 sportscar presented 1983 at the Geneva motorshow. Based on the GTV6 chassis.
The Alfa Romeo Zeta 6, unveiled at the 1983 Geneva Motor Show, was a stunning 2+2 coupe designed by Zagato, Italy’s renowned coachbuilder. This sleek model was based on the Alfa Romeo GTV6’s running gear and powered by a 2.5-liter V6 engine, giving it a solid foundation of performance and handling. As a self-financed project, the Zeta 6 was a bold initiative by Zagato, showcasing their commitment to both beauty and engineering excellence. Styled by Zagato’s chief designer Giuseppe Mittino, the Zeta 6 embodied many of the classic design cues associated with the Milanese coachbuilder. Its compact proportions, short overhangs, and the signature “double-bubble” roof were all standout features, contributing to its unmistakable silhouette. The cockpit was also compact, giving the car a focused and athletic stance. While being practical enough to offer 2+2 seating, the Zeta 6 emphasized sportiness and elegance in every curve and line. The car’s sleek styling and distinctive design helped it stand out as one of the most beautiful creations from Zagato in the 1980s, a decade filled with unique and memorable automotive designs. The Alfa Romeo Zeta 6’s influence extended beyond its own production, as it directly inspired Victor Gauntlett, then chairman of Aston Martin, to collaborate with Zagato on the Aston Martin V8 Zagato project. That car, too, became an iconic example of 1980s automotive styling and further cemented the relationship between Aston Martin and Zagato. Although the Alfa Romeo Zeta 6 never reached large-scale production, its graceful lines, meticulous craftsmanship, and enduring beauty have made it a collector’s favorite. The Zeta 6 stands as a perfect blend of Italian styling and Alfa Romeo engineering, representing one of the finest expressions of 1980s automotive design to bear the legendary Zagato badge.
