Alfa Romeo Z33 Tempo Libero

The Alfa Romeo Z33 Tempo Libero: the minivan by Zagato.

Vehicle Overview

The Alfa Romeo Z33 Tempo Libero: In 1984, Zagato unveiled, at the Geneva Motor Show, a compact minivan measuring 4.0 meters in length, 1.72 meters in width, and 1.60 meters in height, based on the Alfa Romeo 33 platform. This vehicle, showcasing innovative shapes for the 1980s and straying from the typical design language of the brand, never entered series production despite Zagato’s assembly lines being primed and ready. This was due to the economic crisis and financial turmoil that plagued Alfa Romeo during those years, leaving the concept relegated to prototype status. The Alfa Romeo Z 33 Tempo Libero represented a style exercise that completely redefined the concept of car interior space. Versatility, not commonly associated with Alfa Romeo, was brought to the forefront. Refined in both style and mechanics, credit is owed not only to Zagato, renowned for its sometimes controversial yet always futuristic styling, but also to the mechanical base provided by Alfa Romeo to the designers at the Milanese coachbuilder. The request made by Alfa Romeo to Zagato was to develop a vehicle with improved interior space compared to the 33, a compact sports sedan inherently limited by its unique two-box configuration. While retaining the chassis and mechanics of the production car – yielding obvious advantages in terms of ride comfort and performance – Zagato designed a raised body, meticulously crafted to accommodate up to seven passengers. Stylistically, clear inspiration from the 1977 Giulietta is evident in the front end. The resemblance to the transaxle sedan of the Biscione marque is particularly notable in the monolithic structure of the grille, a single block incorporating the headlights and, at its center, the Alfa Romeo badge. Otherwise, the shape is simple and streamlined, with an original raised section at the rear to avoid the dreaded “van effect” typical of early 1980s minivan prototypes. Looking towards the rear, an astute observer cannot help but notice a certain resemblance to the Fiat Uno (third window and therefore, the rear window’s angle) and Panda (taillights). The cabin, designed for six people, also includes a makeshift seventh seat. However, what truly makes the Alfa Romeo Z33 Tempo Libero a car worth examining in depth lies in its space utilization and seat arrangement. In just over four meters, Zagato managed to create a veritable lounge: passengers can converse face to face and comfortably cross their legs without impeding those of others, with seats that can rotate according to passengers’ needs. The Alfa Romeo Z33 Tempo Libero was presented by the Terrazzano di Rho atelier at the 1984 Geneva Motor Show alongside two other creations from the Design division: the Alfa Romeo 2000 SW, an elegant estate car based on the Alfetta chassis, and a reinterpretation of the Lancia Delta GT. As the curtains closed on the Geneva event, Zagato Car’s lines were poised for series production, but Alfa Romeo opted out—a “necessary” decision given the stifling crisis that had begun a decade earlier and would, within a couple of years, signal the end of Alfa as a state-owned company and its transition to Fiat ownership.
