Alfa Romeo Scarabeo

The Alfa Romeo Scarabeo OSI second prototype.

Vehicle Overview

The Alfa Romeo Scarabeo OSI is a captivating chapter in the automaker’s rich history of innovative and experimental designs. Unveiled at the 1966 Paris Motor Show, the Scarabeo was a concept car born from the collaboration between two automotive giants: Giuseppe Busso and Orazio Satta Puliga, alongside the body design talents of Sergio Sartorelli at Officine Stampaggi Industriali (OSI). It was an ambitious project conceived after the Tipo 33’s racing ambitions were handed off to Autodelta, and it sought to create a rear-engined sports car that was lighter, cheaper, and just as thrilling to drive. The design was rooted in practicality and performance. Busso’s engineering expertise led to the decision to use the tubular chassis of the Tipo 33, but with modifications to ensure a more cost-effective and lightweight structure. At the heart of the Scarabeo was an inline-four engine borrowed from the Alfa Romeo GTA, mounted transversely in the rear of the car, paired with the clutch and gearbox in a compact and efficient layout. In an effort to keep the overall cost down, the suspension was adapted from the Renault R8, showcasing a blend of resourcefulness and engineering precision. The Scarabeo’s body, designed by OSI, reflected the era’s desire for sleek and aerodynamic shapes, featuring a smooth, flowing profile that not only looked stunning but also ensured great handling and a top speed of 200 km/h (124.3 mph). The inclusion of fuel tanks mounted on either side of the cockpit further enhanced its driving dynamics, while the lightweight design made it nimble and responsive on the road. Despite the Scarabeo’s exciting potential, the project was ultimately sidelined after the creation of a second prototype with a more streamlined design, and a third Barchetta-style prototype that was never finished. Although the Scarabeo was never mass-produced, its legacy lives on, with the second and third prototypes residing at the Alfa Romeo Museum. The concept represents a tantalizing “what could have been” for Alfa Romeo, a brilliant exploration of innovation and performance that would’ve ushered in a new era of sports cars, had it not been eclipsed by the brand’s focus on racing at Autodelta. The Scarabeo remains a fascinating, underappreciated gem of automotive design, embodying both Alfa Romeo’s bold vision and its commitment to pushing boundaries.
