Alfa Romeo New York Taxi

The Alfa Romeo New York Taxi: a breakthrough in Giugiaro’s design.

Vehicle Overview

The Alfa Romeo New York Taxi was a brainchild of Italdesign Giugiaro, commissioned by the New York Museum of Modern Art for their exhibition “The Taxi Project: realistic solutions for today.” Designed to be a clean, compact, and secure mode of urban transportation, it marked a departure in Giugiaro’s design philosophy from pure aesthetics to pure functionality. With a wheelbase of 4 meters, the taxi could comfortably accommodate up to five passengers. Its interior boasted a flat floor, wheelchair storage space, under-seat compartments, and sliding doors on both sides, a pioneering feature at the time. Functionality took precedence over aesthetics; the emphasis was on providing efficient urban transport. Despite its compact dimensions, the New York Taxi offered ample space for passengers and luggage, occupying 30% less area compared to traditional yellow cabs, thanks to its increased height. Extensive glass panels ensured excellent visibility, while a panoramic glass roof panel treated passengers to a view of the sky. Entry and exit were made hassle-free with sliding doors, leaving the door opening unobstructed by street obstacles. Loading baby carriages and wheelchairs was simplified with a retractable ramp concealed beneath the floorboard, showcasing innovative design solutions. Based on the chassis of the Alfa Romeo F12 van, the New York Taxi inherited its mechanics, including a 1.3-liter boxer gasoline engine and independent front and rear suspensions. Concepts explored in this project later influenced the development of vehicles like the Lancia Megagamma, pioneering the modern minivan concept. The search for improved roominess begins with this project and marks the whole history of Italdesign, until the 2010 Emas project. Carrozzeria Coggiola also contributed to the project with its own NY Taxi, based on a Volvo chassis. The sole prototype produced is preserved within the Alfa Romeo historic museum, serving as a testament to the innovative spirit that marked this era of automotive design.
