Vehicle Overview

The Alfa Romeo Montreal Prototype emerged at the dawn of 1967, marking a bold initiative by Alfa Romeo to create a visionary concept car that would captivate audiences worldwide. Presented at the Montreal Expo the following year, this prototype signaled the manufacturer’s ambitious endeavor to reestablish its illustrious marque on lucrative overseas markets. With aspirations to fulfill “man’s greatest aspirations for a car,” as articulated by Nuccio Bertone, Alfa Romeo sought to craft an advanced and sporty coupé that would redefine automotive excellence. Entrusted with bringing this concept to life, Bertone embarked on a mission to showcase Alfa Romeo’s unwavering commitment to innovation and elegance within a constrained timeframe. The result was nothing short of extraordinary. Bertone’s ingenuity culminated in the creation of the Montreal, a two-seater + 2 coupé characterized by innovative lines and avant-garde design elements. From the distinctive radiator grille to the mesmerizing front headlights and lateral air outlets, every detail exuded a sense of futuristic allure while paying homage to the style and taste canons of the era. Designed by Marcello Gandini, only two Montreal Prototypes were produced, with one proudly displayed at the Alfa Romeo Historical Museum in Arese, Italy, while the other resides in museum storage, serving as a testament to its enduring legacy. The first production model, Tipo 105.64, made its debut at the 1970 Geneva Motor Show, embodying the spirit of the original prototype while incorporating notable refinements. Despite the differences between the prototype and production versions, the unofficial moniker “The Montreal” had already gained widespread recognition, prompting Alfa Romeo to retain the name for the production model. Thus, the Montreal emerged as a symbol of automotive innovation and elegance, leaving an indelible mark on the history of Alfa Romeo and the world of motoring.
