The Alfa Romeo GTV by Italdesign Giugiaro is a sleek and elusive sports coupé that emerged after six years of meticulous development to succeed the iconic Giulia GT. Designed to be a 2+2 coupé, the GTV was built upon the platform of the Alfetta sedan, which debuted in 1972, though its wheelbase was shortened by 110 mm to create a more dynamic driving experience. This model represented a direct evolution of the earlier Alfa Romeo Iguana concept, with certain visual cues from the Iguana influencing the GTV’s design, particularly the large rear side window and the triangular air intake, which became hallmark features of the car. The rear of the GTV stood out with its intricately designed light cluster, featuring two sets of horizontal lights seamlessly integrated into the sheet metal of the tail section. This attention to detail highlighted the innovative approach to design that Giugiaro was known for, blending aesthetics with functionality in a way that felt both modern and timeless. One of Giugiaro’s more radical design proposals for the GTV was the integration of a windshield that would wedge beneath the engine hood, creating space for faired wipers—a feature that would have been a first for a production car. However, Alfa Romeo rejected this bold idea, considering it too daring for mass production at the time. Produced from 1974 to 1986, the Alfa Romeo GTV Italdesign was manufactured in a total of 142,001 units, solidifying its place as one of the most celebrated sports coupés of its era.
