The story of Bertone: the most controversial coachbuilder ever

The Alfa Romeo GT Cabriolet one-off by Bertone.
The Alfa Romeo GT Cabriolet, a creation attributed to the talented designer Giuliano Biasio, held a unique place in automotive lore—it was the personal vehicle of Lilly Bertone, adding an intimate touch to its design narrative. Conceived in 2003, shortly after the debut of the GT Coupé, this convertible was poised to be a standout addition to Alfa Romeo’s lineup. Interestingly, plans initially called for its production at the Grugliasco plant, a decision that reflected Bertone‘s keen interest in bringing it to life. However, the course of fate took a different turn when Fiat, the parent company, made the strategic decision to redirect resources towards the production of the Alfa Romeo Spider instead. Despite receiving enthusiastic support from Daniele Bandiera, then Alfa Romeo’s chief, Fiat’s corporate directives ultimately led to the shelving of the GT Cabriolet project. This decision, coupled with Bandiera’s subsequent departure, underscored the complexities of automotive industry dynamics. The Spider, a convertible variant derived from the Alfa Brera coupé, became the focal point of Fiat’s strategy, designed by the illustrious Giorgetto Giugiaro’s Italdesign and brought to life by the renowned craftsmen at Pininfarina. However, in hindsight, the sales performance of the Spider pales in comparison to the potential success that the GT Cabrio might have achieved. With sales figures painting a stark picture—the Pininfarina Spider achieving modest sales of just over 12,000 units, the Brera surpassing 21,000, while Bertone’s GT Coupé soared past an impressive 80,000 units—the decision to prioritize the Spider over the GT Cabrio seems ripe for reconsideration. Had the GT Cabriolet been given the green light for production, it could have not only contributed significantly to the revenue streams of Fiat and Alfa Romeo but also potentially altered the trajectory of Carrozzeria Bertone, ensuring its continued relevance and independence in the ever-evolving landscape of automotive design and manufacturing.
