The Alfa Romeo Giulia SWB Zagato one-off.
The Alfa Romeo Giulia SWB Zagato is a stunning one-off creation built by Zagato for a discerning German customer who currently drives an Alfa Romeo SZ. This unique model is based on a shortened Alfa Romeo Giulia chassis and features a lightweight carbon fiber body, showcasing the latest 3+3 headlight concept—a nod to the iconic SZ. Developed from the Giorgio modular platform of the Giulia and Stelvio, the SWB optimizes both overhangs and wheelbase. Notably, the project embraced a collaborative approach, involving Alejandro Mesonero, the Vice President of Design at Alfa Romeo, from the outset. According to Zagato, the design and production of the vehicle were carried out without external support, indicating a focused internal effort to create this distinctive automobile. The presence of the Alfa Romeo brand is purely descriptive and promotional, highlighting Zagato’s inspiration from the Alfa Romeo SZ. The SWB was conceived to celebrate the centenary of the partnership between Alfa Romeo and Zagato, which began in 1921 with the Tipo G1. The vehicle elegantly commemorates the current production of the Giulia and Stelvio, featuring the legendary 6-cylinder engine in its latest GTAm evolution, encapsulated within a two-door coupé design. Mechanically, the SWB is powered by a V6 Quadrifoglio Verde with a manual transmission, enhanced with GTAm upgrades. The Ferrari-derived 2.9-liter engine produces an impressive 540 horsepower. The short wheelbase design pays homage to Alfa Romeo’s racing lineage, drawing inspiration from the Codatronca version of the SZ that dominated its GT class in the early 1960s. Alejandro Mesonero remarked on the philosophy behind this 2023 model, which echoes the principles of simplicity, aerodynamics, and lightweight construction established in the 1960s. Designed specifically for a passionate collector with a deep appreciation for Alfa Romeo, the SWB exemplifies a legacy of craftsmanship and performance, further cementing the enduring relationship between Zagato and Alfa Romeo.
