The story of Bertone: the most controversial coachbuilder ever

The Alfa Romeo Giulia GTC Bertone Prototype.
The Alfa Romeo Giulia GTC Bertone is indeed a lesser-known model in the brand’s storied history, particularly when compared to the iconic Giulietta Spider and Duetto. Born out of Alfa Romeo’s desire to offer a convertible version of the Giulia range, the Giulia GTC made its debut at the 1964 Geneva Motor Show. The car was based on the Giulia GT coupé, a design by the renowned Giorgetto Giugiaro while working at Bertone. Interestingly, the first prototype of the GTC was developed by Bertone, who had also crafted the GT coupé. To create the GTC, Bertone simply removed the roof from the original Giulia GT design. However, unlike Bertone’s typical role in manufacturing, series production of the Giulia GTC was handled by Carrozzeria Touring of Milan. Touring was tasked with reinforcing the bodywork to ensure the structural rigidity of the convertible, a necessary modification following the removal of the hardtop. Despite its elegance and the high quality of the modifications, the Giulia GTC never gained the widespread popularity of Alfa’s earlier Giulietta Spider or the later Duetto, possibly due to its more niche market appeal and the stiff competition in the convertible segment. Only around 1,000 units were built between 1964 and 1966, making it a rare and somewhat forgotten piece of Alfa Romeo’s legacy. The Alfa Romeo Giulia GTC Bertone remains a significant yet understated chapter in Alfa Romeo’s convertible history, representing the transitional period from the old Giulietta to the newer Giulia range.
