The story of Bertone: the most controversial coachbuilder ever

The Alfa Romeo Giulia GT Spider by Bertone.
The Alfa Romeo Giulia GT Spider is an intriguing chapter in Alfa Romeo’s history, despite never making it to production. The cabriolet version was conceived at a time when the iconic Alfa Romeo Spider was nearing the end of its lifecycle. To replace the beloved Spider, a convertible version derived from the Giulia GT, a model designed by the legendary Giorgetto Giugiaro for Bertone, was initially proposed. Visually, the Giulia GT Spider prototype closely mirrored the Giulia GT coupe, with only subtle adjustments. One significant change was the shortened chassis, adapted for the open-top format. The prototype of this Spider version was constructed in 1962, with further refinements made in 1963. The Alfa Romeo Style Center, under the guidance of Ernesto Cattoni, was tasked with developing the vehicle’s design, experimenting with alternative solutions for both the front and rear ends. The changes aimed to refresh the look, giving it distinct characteristics that could set it apart from its coupe counterpart while maintaining the brand’s design language. Despite these efforts, the Giulia GT Spider project did not move forward. The arrival of the Pininfarina-designed Duetto played a major role in this decision. The Duetto, with its more streamlined, modern lines, ultimately won Alfa Romeo’s favor. Its elegant and timeless design made it a better fit for the brand’s evolving image during the 1960s. Though the Giulia GT Spider never saw the light of production, it remains a fascinating “what if” in automotive history. The prototype reflects the design exploration and innovation of Alfa Romeo during a period of transition, serving as a reminder of the brand’s willingness to push boundaries before settling on the definitive direction represented by the Pininfarina Duetto.
