Alfa Romeo 6C 3000 CM Berlinetta Colli
Chassis
The Alfa Romeo 6C 3000 CM Colli was born to replace the 6C 3000 C50 in the 1953 Sports category competitions.
Vehicle Overview
The Alfa Romeo 6C Berlinetta Colli: Compared to the previous model, the differences were substantial since a new tubular frame with central beam and new suspensions were designed, which adopted a transverse wishbone scheme in front and a De Dion bridge behind. The brakes remained drum on the four wheels but were strengthened and the rear mounted at the exit of the differential. The six-cylinder in-line engine, designed by Giuseppe Busso for the 6C 3000 prototype, was further enhanced by increasing the displacement to 3,495 cm³ to develop 246 hp and reach 275 hp in subsequent evolutions. In all, six examples were built for the 1953 season, four berlinettas and two small boats, all made by Carrozzeria Colli with references to the style introduced by Touring with the 1900 C52 Disco Volante. In 1954 the official sporting activity of Alfa Romeo was interrupted and all the chassis of the 6C 3000 CM were alienated undergoing different destinies. Of the two Barchetta, the 6C 3000 PR was completely destroyed in the accident while the 6C 3000 CM Spider Merano at the end of its racing career was used by the Experience Department to study the use of disc brakes on production cars and is now preserved in the Alfa Romeo Historical Museum. The four berlinettas were sold to various private customers, one to the pilot Joakim Bonnier, who after an accident had it rebodied by Zagato as a small barchetta; one to Carrozzeria Ghia which destiny is unknows; one to Carrozzeria Boano which built a special car for the Argentine president Juan Domingo Peron and the last one to Pininfarina, who used it as a base for the dream cars Superflow series designed by Aldo Brovarone.
