The Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 Viotti, designed in 1928 by Mario Revelli di Beaumont, stands as a classic beauty and a class winner at the 1928 Concorso d’Eleganza di Torino. Its engineering marvels include a simple yet robust chassis with stamped steel C-section longitudinal and transverse members, rigid front and rear axles, semi-elliptic leaf springs, friction shock absorbers, and mechanical drum brakes on all four 19-inch wire-spoked wheels. Underneath its elegant exterior lies a revolutionary six-cylinder inline engine, a design so advanced that it remained in production, albeit updated, until 1933, securing numerous victories across various competitions. The initial model featured an aluminum base, a cast iron monoblock, and a fixed head with overhead intake and exhaust valves commanded by an overhead camshaft. The engine’s exact displacement was 1487 cm³ (bore x stroke: 62 x 82 mm), just shy of 1.5 liters, giving rise to the 6C 1500 moniker. This powerplant, with its remarkable output of 44 horsepower at 4200 rpm, exhibited exceptional power and a high rotation speed for its time, thanks to the reduced unit displacement (250 cm³) that significantly enhanced thermal efficiency by around 200% compared to contemporary standards. Also on this Alfa Romeo 6C 1500 Viotti, the engine was mated to a four-speed gearbox with an integrated handbrake acting on the transmission.
