The Alfa Romeo 2600 SZ stands out as a striking example of the innovative design philosophy championed by Zagato, marking a notable chapter in Alfa Romeo’s automotive history. Introduced in 1965, the 2600 SZ was a dramatic departure from the more traditional and conservative styling of the standard 2600 models. Designed by Ercole Spada at Zagato, this model was intended to redefine the aesthetic boundaries of Alfa Romeo’s range. Built upon the series “106.12” chassis, the 2600 SZ was powered by the “AR 00612” engine; a 2,584cc six-cylinder twin-cam unit equipped with two Solex 44 double-body carburettors, producing 145 horsepower. Despite its performance, with a top speed of 210 km/h—17 km/h faster than the standard 2600 Sprint, the 2600 SZ’s striking design was its most defining feature. The design of the 2600 SZ, presented as a prototype in November 1962 and finalized between 1964 and 1965, was characterized by its radical departure from traditional automotive aesthetics. The car featured a bold, shark-like front end and a unique rear with large glass surfaces and a pronounced bubble that extended onto the rear bonnet. This modern, edgy look was initially polarizing, often described as disconcerting due to its unconventional styling. The 2600 SZ’s design was a significant departure from the more classic and bourgeois 2600 Sprint Coupés and Spiders. Spada’s design was meant to be avant-garde, pushing the boundaries of automotive design at the time. The final version of the car, despite its high price tag of four million lire, was intended for a select audience and only 105 units were produced. Today, the Alfa Romeo 2600 SZ is highly regarded among collectors and design enthusiasts, having gained appreciation for its innovative design and rarity. While it may have initially seemed controversial, its unique styling has become an emblem of the collaboration between Alfa Romeo and Zagato.
