The Alfa Romeo 1900C Americano by Carrozzeria Ghia.
The Alfa Romeo 1900C Americano by Ghia is a rare and fascinating chapter in the history of Alfa Romeo’s 1900 series, blending Italian craftsmanship with bespoke design tailored to American tastes. Between 1954 and 1955, Ghia produced 21 vehicles based on the 1900C platform, with seven of these designated as Supergioiello models and fifteen built in the more powerful Super Sprint (SS) configuration, featuring the 1975cc engine. Additionally, three unique coupes were built on the longer-wheelbase 1900L chassis. Among these special creations, the Americano emerged as an especially notable design. The 1900C Americano was the result of a collaboration between Mario Felice Boano’s son, Gian Paolo Boano, and Giovanni Savonuzzi, both prominent designers at Ghia during the 1950s. This particular model was aimed at meeting the stylistic preferences of Ghia’s American clientele. The design incorporated distinct features that set it apart from other 1900C-based creations. These differences included variations in the headlights, bumpers, rear end treatments, and rear light clusters, giving each car a unique personality. Interior designs also varied between cars, showcasing Ghia’s commitment to creating tailored luxury. The Americano’s story is further distinguished by its exclusivity. Only two coupes were produced under this designation, one of which was specifically commissioned by an American customer who was enamored with the design. This second car, built on the shorter and more performance-oriented 1900C Super Sprint chassis, highlighted the versatility of Ghia’s approach to coachbuilding. Each Americano was a masterpiece of mid-century design, combining the elegance of Italian craftsmanship with a touch of flair aimed at the American market. The cars’ low production numbers and the individuality of each design make the 1900C Americano by Ghia an exceptionally rare collector’s piece today. It stands as a testament to the era’s bespoke coachbuilding tradition and the creative synergy between Alfa Romeo and Ghia during a golden age of automotive design.
