The Alfa Romeo 1900C Sprint Supergioiello by Ghia.
Vehicle Overview
The Alfa Romeo 1900C Sprint Supergioiello is a distinguished creation by Carrozzeria Ghia, unveiled at the 1953 Turin Auto Salon. This meticulously crafted vehicle captivated audiences not only at the Turin Auto Salon but also at various prestigious auto shows across Europe, including the concours d’elegance in Rome, Campione d’Italia, and San Remo. Alfa Romeo’s postwar transformation was dramatic. Previously known for luxury cars and aviation engines, the company had to adapt to the postwar economy, where luxury car demand was low and aviation engine production was forbidden by the terms of Italy’s defeat. The 1900 model, Alfa Romeo’s first production-line vehicle, marked this transformation. It retained the marque’s traditional virtues, including technical innovation and a sporting spirit, while targeting a more accessible market segment. The 1900 featured advanced brakes, suspension, and powertrain, providing exceptional performance. It used Alfa Romeo’s first-ever twin-cam inline-four engine, designed by the legendary Giuseppe Busso. The car also featured unibody construction and was available in both standard sedan and short forms (1900C for corto, or “short” in Italian). The 1900C was specifically developed for coachbuilders to create special-bodied cars. Of the more than 21,000 1900s produced, only approximately 8% were 1900Cs, with most of those receiving coachwork from Touring of Milan or Pinin Farina. A few dozen were bodied by other Italian or Swiss coachbuilders, including the iconic Torinese firm Ghia. Ghia bodied very few 1900s, but each one was a striking representation of their artistic flair. The Alfa Romeo 1900C Sprint Supergioiello, with its impeccable design, garnered accolades and recognition, solidifying its status as one of Ghia’s prized show cars. Chassis 01549, built in 1954, was delivered new to Gumersindo Garcia Fernandez of Spain, who registered it with the Real Automóvil Club de España. Fernandez was an enthusiastic driver and competed in numerous events that year, including the first Rally de los Pirineos. The highlight of his competition endeavors with the Alfa Romeo 1900C Sprint Supergioiello was a 1st in class victory at the Subida a la Dehesa de la Villa held on 21 November. This victory, along with its participation in various prestigious events, underscores the car’s exceptional performance and the enthusiasm it generated among automotive aficionados. The Alfa Romeo 1900C Sprint Supergioiello by Carrozzeria Ghia remains a testament to the collaborative artistry between Alfa Romeo and Ghia, showcasing the elegance, innovation, and sporting prowess that defined the era.
