Abarth 500 Pininfarina Record

The Abarth 500 Pininfarina Record Car.

Vehicle Overview

The Abarth 500 Pininfarina Record is a marvel of engineering born from a small car and big ambitions. After the success of the Abarth 750 Record, Carlo Abarth turned his attention to the Fiat Nuova 500—a car far smaller and less powerful, but one that could still shatter expectations. Partnering with Pininfarina, Abarth set out to create a record-breaking version of the Fiat 500, adhering to international regulations while extracting every ounce of performance possible. The modifications were meticulous. The engine’s compression ratio was increased to 10.5:1, and every component was fine-tuned for balance. Abarth’s signature performance muffler was added, optimizing the intake and exhaust systems for maximum efficiency. The car’s body was stripped of unnecessary weight, though regulations required that repairs be made using only the car’s onboard tools and spare parts—a stipulation that somewhat diminished the weight savings. The attempt began on February 13, 1958, at the Monza racetrack. Over the next several days, six drivers—Remo Cattini, Armando Giuberti, Marino Guarnieri, Corrado Manfredini, Mario Poltronieri, and Elio Zagato—took turns every three hours, pushing the Abarth 500 to its limits. What began as a private test soon drew attention when the car maintained an average speed of 109 km/h over four days. On February 20, 1958, the Abarth 500 had completed the endurance run, covering 18,186.44 kilometers in 168 hours. It set six international records for cars in the 351cc to 500cc category. Fiat executives, initially indifferent to Abarth’s racing ambitions, were astounded. Fiat’s president, Vittorio Valletta, personally congratulated Abarth, and this success marked the beginning of a fruitful partnership. Abarth’s victory with the Fiat 500 not only demonstrated the brand’s capabilities but solidified Abarth’s role in performance car history.
