Abarth 207 A Spyder

The Abarth 207 A Spyder by Boano.

Vehicle Overview

The Abarth 207 A Spyder represents a significant chapter in Carlo Abarth’s storied racing legacy, building on the success of the earlier 205 model. Introduced in 1954 and showcased at the 1955 Turin Motor Show, the 207 A Spyder captured considerable attention, securing an initial 10 orders. The car was built on Fiat 1100 mechanics, with its power output enhanced to 66 horsepower thanks to the addition of two Weber carburetors and new exhaust manifolds. Uniquely, the 207 A Spyder’s body, designed by Giovanni Michelotti, was constructed entirely from steel by Carrozzeria Boano — a notable departure from the lightweight materials typically used in racing cars of the era. This steel construction contributed to the car’s distinctive appearance and durability but also resulted in added weight. One of the Spyder’s most striking features was its stainless steel exhaust pipes, which protruded from the right side of the vehicle, showcasing Abarth’s signature style and engineering prowess. Despite its innovative design and strong initial reception, the 207 A Spyder faced significant challenges on the race track. Its debut at the 12 Hours of Sebring in 1955 was marred by a disqualification due to a refueling infraction, and its overall performance was hampered by its excessive weight. This limitation affected its competitiveness in racing circuits, preventing it from achieving the success that its engineering and design might have otherwise warranted. The Abarth 207 A Spyder was part of a broader lineup that included the 208 A and the 209 A Coupé, each reflecting the collaborative efforts of Carlo Abarth and Felice Mario Boano. While the Spyder may not have achieved notable racing victories, it remains a remarkable and innovative addition to the Abarth legacy, highlighting the company’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of automotive design and performance.
