Introduce
The 2023 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, held against the stunning backdrop of California’s coastline, witnessed an unparalleled display of automotive history and elegance. The event, which is renowned for showcasing the world’s most prestigious and meticulously restored cars, culminated with the crowning of a 1937 Mercedes-Benz 540K Special Roadster as Best of Show. This exceptional vehicle, part of the Patterson Collection in Louisville, Kentucky, stands as one of only three remaining examples of its kind, making its recognition a momentous occasion.
The Best of Show award was presented to Jim Patterson, who meticulously restored the 540K to honor its storied past. “This 540K balances strength with sweeping lines and style, and its history is unique,” noted Concours Chairman Sandra Button. She praised Patterson’s dedication to the restoration, highlighting the extensive research and care that went into preserving the car’s historical integrity.
The 2023 Concours featured an impressive lineup of 216 vehicles representing 18 countries and 30 states. Among the noteworthy contenders for Best of Show were the Auriga Collection’s 1930 Mercedes-Benz 710 SS Special Roadster, the 1932 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Corto Figoni Cabriolet displayed by Gregor Fisken, and the 1939 Delahaye 165 Figoni et Falaschi Cabriolet from the Peter Mullin Automotive Museum Foundation.
In addition to the prestigious Best of Show accolade, the Concours celebrated a range of awards across various categories, showcasing the depth and diversity of the automotive world. The Gwenn Graham Most Elegant Convertible award went to a 1950 Talbot-Lago T26 Grand Sport Saoutchik Cabriolet, while the J.B. & Dorothy Nethercutt Most Elegant Closed Car was claimed by a 1937 Bugatti Type 57S Atalante.
The event’s elegance extended to special honors, such as the Alec Ulmann Trophy awarded to a 1936 Hispano-Suiza J-12 Saoutchik Cabriolet, and the Ansel Adams Award recognizing a 1923 Rolls-Royce Silver Ghost Pall Mall. The ArtCenter College of Design Award was given to a 1963 Porsche 901 Prototype “Quickblau” Karmann/Reutter Coupe, reflecting the Concours’ commitment to celebrating automotive design innovation.
The Concours also raised over $2.68 million for charity this year, furthering its legacy of philanthropic impact. Through the Pebble Beach Company Foundation, these funds will support more than 90 local charities, positively affecting the lives of over 10,000 children annually in Monterey County.
Gooding & Company, the official auction house, achieved notable success with its 19th sale at the Concours, presenting its largest catalog to date and achieving over $92 million in sales. The highlight of the auction was the sale of an unrestored 1962 Ferrari 250 GT SWB Berlinetta for $9,465,000. Additionally, a 1914 Mercer Type 35-J Raceabout set a new world record for the marque, selling for $4,790,000.
Looking ahead, the 73rd Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance is scheduled for August 18, 2024. The event will honor the marques of Packard and Maserati, alongside a celebration of the creations of Italian coachbuilder Pietro Frua. The anticipation for next year’s gathering promises another spectacular display of automotive excellence.
