Introduce
Rodolfo Bonetto (Milan, September 18, 1929 – Milan, March 28, 1991) was a renowned Italian designer, celebrated for his contributions to industrial design and for his role in promoting the “Made in Italy” product internationally in the post-war period. He won eight Compassi d’Oro awards throughout his career, marking him as one of the most prominent figures in the Italian design world.
Bonetto’s passion for design began in his youth, initially as a jazz drummer before discovering his true calling. His interest in automobiles was sparked by his paternal uncle, Felice Bonetto, a famous racing driver in the early 1950s. This connection led the young Bonetto to draw sketches of cars, eventually shaping his future career in design.
Self-taught, Bonetto began his career as a design consultant at Pininfarina, where he worked from 1951 to 1957. His formal design career took off in 1958 when he established his own design studio in Milan. Over the course of his extensive career, he worked across a broad spectrum of industries, designing everything from home appliances and automotive bodies for companies like Boneschi and Viotti, to musical instruments, electronics, televisions, suitcases, furniture, and lighting systems.
Bonetto also contributed to the education of future designers, teaching industrial design at the Hochschule für Gestaltung in Ulm from 1961 to 1965, and at the ISIA in Rome from 1974 to 1979. He played a prominent role in various design associations, serving as president of the ADI (Associazione per il Disegno Industriale) from 1971 to 1973, and as president of ICSID (International Council of Societies of Industrial Design) from 1981 to 1983.
Bonetto was honored with eight Compassi d’Oro awards, a recognition of his outstanding contributions to the design industry. The final Compasso d’Oro was awarded posthumously in 1991, shortly after his death, as a tribute to his thirty years of innovative work. After his passing, his design studio continued under the leadership of his son, Marco Bonetto, who expanded its activities into the automotive design sector.
