Introduce

Roberto Giolito (born November 10, 1962, in Ancona, Italy) is an acclaimed Italian automobile designer known for his contributions to the FIAT brand and his role in shaping modern automotive design.

Giolito gained international recognition for creating some of the most innovative and influential cars of recent decades, including the 1998 Fiat Multipla and the 2007 Fiat 500. The Multipla, despite its polarizing design, became a cultural icon, earning a place in the collection of the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York and being honored as “Family Car of the Year” multiple times. The Fiat 500, celebrated for its stylish reimagining of the original, won “Car of the Year” in 2008, “World Car Design of the Year” in 2009, and the prestigious Compasso d’Oro for industrial design in 2011.

Giolito graduated with a degree in industrial design from the Istituto Superiore per le Industrie Artistiche (ISIA) in Rome in 1985. He initially worked in graphic design, communication, and interior design before joining Fiat in 1989. Early in his career, he explored prototypes of eco-friendly vehicles, which reflected his interest in alternative mobility solutions.

In 1998, Giolito’s breakthrough came with the design of the Fiat Multipla, a bold and unconventional vehicle that divided opinions but cemented his reputation as a visionary designer. In 2001, he founded and led Fiat’s Advanced Design Center, assembling a multidisciplinary team to focus on innovative approaches to mobility.

Giolito’s career reached new heights with the launch of the Fiat 500 in 2007. The car became a global success and a symbol of modern Italian design, leading to his promotion as the chief designer for Fiat and Abarth. He also oversaw the development of the Fiat 500 family, including models like the 500L and 500X.

In 2016, Giolito transitioned to Head of FCA Heritage, where he has focused on preserving and promoting the rich history of Fiat and other Italian automotive brands within the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) group. Through his work, Giolito continues to influence both the present and future of automotive design.
