Introduce

Lorenzo Ramaciotti, born January 6, 1948, in Modena, Italy, is one of the most influential automotive designers of his generation. His illustrious career spans several decades, marked by significant contributions to both high-end luxury brands and mass-market vehicles. With a degree in mechanical engineering from the Politecnico di Torino, Ramaciotti’s technical background combined with his artistic flair for design allowed him to carve out a unique position in the world of automotive design.

Ramaciotti’s career began in 1973 when he joined Pininfarina, one of the most prestigious design houses in the automotive industry. His early work included overseeing model production and prototyping, which quickly led to his appointment as deputy director of Pininfarina Studi e Ricerche in 1982. By 1988, he had risen to the role of managing director and head of design, a position he would hold for 17 years. During this period, Ramaciotti supervisioned some of the most iconic Ferrari models, such as the Ferrari 456 (1992), Ferrari 550 Maranello (1996), and the Ferrari Enzo (2002). His contributions also extended to Maserati, with designs like the Maserati Quattroporte V (2003) and various concept cars like the Maserati Birdcage 75th (2005).

In 2005, after 32 years at Pininfarina, Ramaciotti briefly considered retirement but was drawn back into the automotive world by Fiat Group. In 2007, he took on the role of head of Fiat’s design center, overseeing the design for multiple brands, including Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Maserati, and later, Chrysler Group brands. Under his leadership, models like the Alfa Romeo Giulietta (2010) and Alfa Romeo 4C (2013) were developed. Ramaciotti also played a key role in defining the modern design language for Maserati, especially in the Maserati Quattroporte VI and Maserati Ghibli III.

Ramaciotti’s design philosophy is marked by a unique blend of elegance, sportiness, and technical precision, and his work has left an indelible mark on the automotive world. Even after stepping down from his role in 2015, he continued to advise Fiat Chrysler as a consultant, ensuring his influence persisted in shaping the future of automotive design.
