Fabrizio Giugiaro

Introduce

Fabrizio Giugiaro, born in Turin on March 7, 1965, is an Italian designer and a prominent figure in the automotive industry. He is the son of the legendary Giorgetto Giugiaro, a renowned designer who founded Italdesign, one of Italy’s most influential design companies. Fabrizio holds a key role at Italdesign, having served as Vice President and, from 2006 to 2014, as the Director of the Style Area. Although the majority of Italdesign was acquired by the Volkswagen Group in 2010, Fabrizio remains actively involved in the company, continuing his leadership at the helm of the family business.

Fabrizio’s passion for design began at an early age. He recounts his first experience with car design at the age of six when he was the first to sit in the prototype of the Alfasud Caimano, a model set to be presented at the 1971 Frankfurt Motor Show. The unique design of the car’s large windshield and roof made him feel as if he were aboard a spaceship, an experience that left a lasting impression on him. This moment marked the beginning of his journey into the world of automotive design.

After completing his studies at the artistic high school and the Faculty of Architecture, Fabrizio joined Italdesign, where he honed his skills under the mentorship of his father and other industry experts. His early years at the company involved working on research projects and commissioned designs, such as the Volkswagen W12 and Bugatti EB112, which provided him with a solid foundation in design while avoiding costly mistakes.

At the age of 26, Fabrizio had his first major design project with the Nazca, a mid-engine sports car with a carbon fiber body. His portfolio continued to grow with successful projects, including the Daewoo Matiz, and he contributed to iconic designs like the Alfa Romeo 156 and the Fiat Grande Punto, working alongside his father. In 2008, Giorgetto Giugiaro expressed his pride in having his son in the company, highlighting Fabrizio’s fresh ideas and the generational energy he brought to the business.

In celebration of Italdesign’s 40th anniversary, Fabrizio introduced the Quaranta at the Geneva Motor Show, a car inspired by the Bizzarrini Manta, a design created by his father in 1968. This symbolic gesture reflected the company’s ongoing legacy in the design world.

Fabrizio Giugiaro’s contributions extend beyond automotive design. In 2012, he received an honorary degree in Architecture from the Georgian Technical University in Tbilisi. He is also an aviation enthusiast, holding a license to pilot helicopters and small aircraft. A fan of rally sports and a dedicated Juventus supporter, Fabrizio contributed to the external design of the Juventus Stadium, inaugurated in 2011.

He is married to Jessica Montori and is the proud father of three daughters: Paolina, Flora Maria, and Adele.
