October 29th, 2024 — Automotive legend Bertone is reviving a design icon from its past with the unveiling of the new Bertone RUNABOUT. Over fifty years after the Autobianchi A112 Concept wowed audiences at the 1969 Turin Motor Show, Bertone reintroduces this icon with a modern twist, combining neo-retro styling and an impressive 500 hp V6 powerhouse. This marks the first model in the new Bertone CLASSIC line, which pays homage to the brand’s timeless creations with updated engineering and performance.
The Bertone RUNABOUT will be offered in two distinct configurations: the “barchetta” version, designed for an open-air, immersive driving experience, and the “targa” version with a removable roof for added versatility. Both embody the spirit of freedom and performance, with a focus on delivering an exhilarating connection between car and driver.
From 55 to 500 hp: A Tribute to Performance Evolution
The original 1969 Bertone Runabout concept was powered by a modest 1.1-liter engine delivering 55 hp. While it never entered production, it left a significant legacy, inspiring both the FIAT X1/9 and influencing the design of the Lancia Stratos. This latest model, however, takes performance to a new level with a 500 hp V6 engine, providing a remarkable leap forward while preserving the nimble, driver-focused character of its predecessor.
Inside, the RUNABOUT is a two-seater with an exclusive, shoulder-to-shoulder seating layout that emphasizes the car’s sport-focused design. Unlike the original concept, this modern iteration includes side doors for added convenience without compromising the streamlined aesthetic of the original design.
Limited Series and the Bertone CLASSIC Line Launch
In line with Bertone’s commitment to exclusivity, the RUNABOUT will be produced in a limited series, underscoring the brand’s attention to craftsmanship and design. Its release also launches the Bertone CLASSIC line, a collection dedicated to reimagining some of Bertone’s most iconic cars with modern enhancements.
Andrea Mocellin, the Design Lead, commented on the design philosophy behind the RUNABOUT: “The new Bertone RUNABOUT is not just a design object but a celebration of Italy’s tradition of spectacular sports cars—crafted for driving pleasure and the joy of life. It captures the essence of pure design with only two defining lines.”
How Much Will the New Bertone RUNABOUT Cost?
Production is scheduled to begin in mid-2026, with pricing for the Bertone RUNABOUT starting at EUR 350,000, excluding VAT. This premium price reflects the car’s exclusivity, powerful engine, and meticulous craftsmanship, making it a highly anticipated addition to the collector and enthusiast markets.
