The BMW 328 Spider Vignale one-off (fake?).
The BMW 328 Spider Vignale is a captivating automotive mystery, a classic cloaked in uncertainty and wrapped in elegant sheet metal. Originally a standard BMW 328, this particular example found its way to Spain in 1949, where its story took an unexpected turn. In 2021, the car reemerged at the Classic Gala in Schwetzingen, Germany, sporting a sleek, modernized body attributed to the famed Italian coachbuilder Carrozzeria Vignale. According to the tale, a young Spaniard with a passion for design and speed sought to give the iconic pre-war sports car a fresh, contemporary identity, prompting its transformation. While the revised bodywork is undeniably attractive—streamlined, low-slung, and distinct from the original 328 design—its origins are anything but clear. Despite the attribution to Vignale, no solid evidence exists to confirm the connection. There are no period documents, no design drawings, and no archival photos linking this unique body to Vignale or to Giovanni Michelotti, the studio’s most prolific designer at the time. Furthermore, experts point out that the car’s styling lacks Michelotti’s characteristic flourishes, such as the fluid proportions and signature detailing seen on his verified works. This absence of verifiable provenance has led many historians and collectors to believe the Spider’s coachwork is a later creation, possibly crafted decades after the 1940s. While its exact origins remain shrouded in mystery, the car has nonetheless captured the fascination of the classic car community. Ongoing investigations may one day uncover the full story behind its creation, but until then, it remains a source of intrigue and debate among automotive historians and enthusiasts alike.
