Vehicle Overview
The Cadillac Eldorado Brougham stands as one of the most exclusive “production” Cadillacs from the 1950s and 60s, having been crafted between 1959 and 1960 in Italy by Pininfarina, a collaborative partner of Cadillac. This distinctive vehicle witnessed meticulous handcrafting of its bodywork by the Italian firm, incorporating the original American mechanics. In contrast to the extravagance of the preceding two years, these Eldorados boasted a more understated exterior style, accompanied by a more accessible price point. Their unique aesthetic appeal included discreetly integrated taillights within the fins, deviating from the larger and more conspicuous designs of earlier Cadillac models. With only 99 units ever produced, surviving examples are exceedingly rare. Among the defining features of earlier Cadillac models were the rear optical groups, characterized by a double ogive shape, seamlessly embedded in fins reaching nearly a meter in height. Symbolically resembling missile guidance plans, these elements reflected the distinctive stylistic choices of the Eldorado, charting a course for future design directions. However, despite these unique attributes, the Broughams manufactured between 1959 and 1960 are not as highly sought after by collectors. The overall quality of these vehicles fell short of the exceptionally high standards set by their predecessors in the 1957-1958 biennium. The year 1960 marked the conclusion of the importation of Italian Eldorado Broughams, signaling the onset of a protracted period of obscurity for this model. Pininfarina’s creative endeavors extended beyond the Eldorado Brougham, as they fashioned several one-of-a-kind vehicles based on Cadillac chassis, including the Starlight, Skylight coupé and convertible, and the Jaqueline. Each of these creations added to the legacy of collaboration between Pininfarina and Cadillac, contributing to the rich tapestry of automotive design history.
