Innocenti IM3

The Innocenti IM3 by Pininfarina.

Vehicle Overview

The Innocenti IM3: In 1963, Innocenti entered an agreement with the British Motor Corporation (BMC) to produce a variant of the ADO 16 in Italy. The car was introduced in 1964 as the IM3 (Innocenti-Morris 3rd model). Compared to the original Morris 1100, the Innocenti IM3 featured a distinctive front end restyled by Pininfarina. This included vertically oriented headlights and a wider grille, giving the IM3 a unique and upscale appearance. The interiors were notably more refined than those of its British counterpart, boasting a dashboard covered in satin aluminum, more contoured and comfortable seats, carpeted flooring instead of rubber, and a more comprehensive array of accessories. Under the hood, the IM3 was equipped with the 55 horsepower 1.100 engine from the Vanden Plas and MG versions of the Morris 1100, providing a spirited driving experience that appealed to enthusiasts. The car’s price was set higher than the larger Fiat 1500, targeting a more discerning clientele who desired superior finishes and features without the need for large, demanding engines or dimensions. This strategic positioning paid off, as the IM3 achieved considerable success in the market, especially due to its impressive performance and refined Italian design. Recognizing the need for a more competitively priced option, Innocenti introduced the IM3 14 in 1965, a more affordable variant designed to compete directly with the popular Fiat 1100. The IM3 14 closely resembled the original Morris 1100 but maintained Innocenti’s commitment to quality. In 1966, the 14 S was launched, incorporating the more powerful engine from the original IM3, thus offering a blend of performance and affordability. Throughout its production run, the Innocenti IM3 remained a symbol of Italian craftsmanship blended with British engineering. It offered a unique alternative to other compact sedans of its time, appealing to buyers who valued elegance, performance, and the exclusivity of a less common brand. However, as competition in the automotive market intensified, the IM3 and its variants faced growing challenges. Despite this, the IM3’s legacy as a stylish and well-appointed compact sedan persisted until production ceased in 1974, marking the end of a distinctive chapter in Innocenti’s automotive history.
