Vehicle Overview
The Alfa Romeo 145/146 design proposal by the I.DE.A. Institute in 1992 was an early concept for the brand’s upcoming compact hatchback models. The design aimed to create a modern and distinctive look while maintaining Alfa Romeo’s signature sportiness and elegance. The proposal featured a sharp, angular aesthetic with a narrow, aggressive grille integrated into the bonnet, complemented by rectangular headlights that reflected early 1990s aerodynamic trends. The overall shape was more boxy than the final production versions, with a wedge-like profile and a clean, uninterrupted beltline running from front to rear. The side profile emphasized a dynamic stance with sculpted wheel arches and a gently sloping roofline. The three-door version, which would later become the 145, had a sportier, coupe-like silhouette, while the five-door variant, the future 146, had a slightly more upright design to maximize passenger space and practicality. The rear design of the proposal was minimalist, with simple taillight arrangements and a subtle integrated spoiler, showcasing a functional yet stylish approach. The interior layout of the proposal remains largely unknown, but given the era and Alfa Romeo’s tradition, it was expected to feature a driver-oriented cockpit with a sporty instrument cluster and premium materials. The engineering would have likely been based on the Fiat Tipo platform, shared with other models like the Lancia Delta, ensuring a balance of responsive handling and everyday usability. In the end, Alfa Romeo decided against using the I.DE.A. Institute’s design, instead opting for a final version developed by Centro Stile Alfa Romeo.
