Lloyd Arabella Coupé Frua
The Lloyd Arabella Coupé designed by Pietro Frua.
Vehicle Overview
The Lloyd Arabella Coupé designed by Pietro Frua was born from a directive issued in early 1959 by the commercial department of Lloyd Motoren Werke in Bremen, led by sales director Willi Tegtmeier. Tasked with the challenge of creating a stylish coupe for the new Lloyd Arabella while keeping costs minimal, Frua ingeniously repurposed the Frua body of the Alexander with subtle adjustments to accommodate the Arabella’s components. The result was a sporty variant of the elegant Arabella sedan, featuring a new 4-cylinder boxer engine producing 45 horsepower. Frua’s design seamlessly integrated into the new chassis, providing a more substantial counterpart to the slender Alexander TS in both size and performance. This captivating coupe made its debut at the 1959 Frankfurt Auto Show, and was also showcased at the Brussels Auto Show in 1960 and in Geneva on the Borgward Group’s stand at the 30th Geneva International Motor Show. Despite the initial excitement surrounding the model, only two prototypes were constructed, and plans for limited production slated to begin in the spring of 1960 ultimately fell through.
