The Zagato Mostro powered by Maserati.

Vehicle Overview

The Zagato Mostro, a limited production GT coupé, was introduced at the 2015 Concorso d’Eleganza di Villa d’Este to commemorate Maserati’s centenary and pay homage to one of its most legendary race cars, the Maserati 450 S Coupé Zagato “Monster” from 1957. Designed in collaboration with aerodynamics specialist Frank Costin and based on the preferences of racing driver Stirling Moss, the original Monster set a precedent for the Mostro’s design ethos. Only five units of the Zagato Mostro were produced, each embodying pure racing mechanics with the potential for road homologation. The car adheres closely to the GT philosophy with a lightweight carbon monocoque chassis combined with a tubular steel structure, offering both strength and agility. The exterior shell is crafted entirely from carbon fiber, emphasizing functional aerodynamic elements essential for high-performance driving. Designed by Norihiko Harada, Zagato’s chief designer, the Mostro features a retro-style body characterized by a long hood, low roofline, and distinctive butterfly doors. Inside, the cockpit is minimalist yet modern, featuring a digital dashboard to complement its racing pedigree. Despite its performance focus, the Mostro is surprisingly lightweight, tipping the scales at just 1,000 kg. Powering the Mostro is a robust 4.2-liter V8 engine sourced from Maserati, capable of producing 420 horsepower. It is paired with a semi-automatic six-speed gearbox derived from the Maserati GranTurismo, ensuring a thrilling driving experience reminiscent of its racing heritage. Notably, the Mostro retains a purist approach with minimal electronic aids, excluding electronic stability control, anti-lock braking, and traction control systems. Unveiled at the 2015 Villa d’Este Concorso d’Eleganza, the Zagato Mostro exemplifies automotive craftsmanship and innovation, blending timeless design with cutting-edge engineering. Its limited production and uncompromising performance make it a coveted collector’s item, appealing to enthusiasts who appreciate both the heritage of Maserati and the artistry of Zagato.
