The Alfa Romeo Junior Zagato was designed by Ercole Spada then head of design for the Milanese coachbuilder and was presented, on October 27, 1969, to the international press in the Biscaretti Museum and, the following day, was exhibited to the public in the Turin Motor Show.
The Alfa Romeo Junior Zagato was created following the December 31, 1966 closure of Carrozzeria Touring, which had long assisted Alfa Romeo in making special versions of its models. Giuseppe Luraghi decided to start a collaborative relationship with Carrozzeria Zagato for the production of sports cars in small series, in order to expand the company’s range offer on “Giulia” mechanics and to give productive follow-up, at least in appearance, to the “Scarabeo” prototype presented in 1966 that had gained great acclaim among fans of the brand. It is a coupe produced in 1510 examples. The 1290 cm³ displacement version was produced between 1969 and 1972, and the 1570 cm³ from 1972 to 1975. The powertrain and mechanicals came from the Alfa Romeo GT Junior. The front headlights were covered with a sheet of Plexiglas, which optimized aerodynamics. At the rear, the two models were also recognizable by the difference in headlights with the red lights and turn signals placed side by side in the 1300 and overlapping in the larger version; in the former case they were those that equipped the Alfa Romeo 1750 sedan of the same period, in the latter those of the Alfa Romeo 2000. Another difference was to be found in the length, which went from 3,900 to 4,000 mm in the version of the most recent Alfa Romeo Junior Zagato.
