The Fiat 8V Spider Vignale: the one off designed by Michelotti.

Vehicle Overview

The Fiat 8V Spider Vignale, a one-off designed by Giovanni Michelotti, stands as a testament to the artistry and innovation of Italian automotive design in the early 1950s. This particular 8V model, also known as the Otto Vu in Italian, is one of the rarest and most legendary cars ever produced by Fiat, with only 114 examples built over a brief two-year period. The 8V made its stunning debut at the Geneva Salon in March 1952, capturing the attention and admiration of the motoring press and public alike. Road & Track heralded it as “the biggest surprise of the year,” while The Motor noted the unexpected nature of such a streamlined and sporty two-seater saloon from Italy’s largest car manufacturer. The combination of Fiat’s potent new powerplant and the exquisite bodies crafted by the world’s finest coachbuilders made it clear that the 8V was a truly special automobile. Chassis number 000050, the Fiat 8V Spider Vignale, was exported as a chassis on July 8, 1953, to the renowned Italian coachbuilder Vignale. Alfredo Vignale collaborated with his talented stylist, Giovanni Michelotti, to create potential designs, evolving and refining the final automobile through a meticulous and creative process. This partnership resulted in Vignale bodying ten 8V chassis, all following Michelotti’s innovative designs. Among these, chassis 000050 is unique as the only cabriolet and one of very few open-bodied 8Vs produced by any coachbuilder, with Zagato being another notable contributor. The drawing for this exclusive cabriolet indicates that it was designed specifically for a Sig. Leone. The car bears a remarkable resemblance to a similar coupé built by Vignale on another 8V chassis, yet it possesses the distinctive and breezy appeal that only a convertible top can offer. The result is an automobile that combines the elegance and sophistication of Michelotti’s design with the dynamic performance and prestige of the Fiat 8V. The 8V Spider Vignale is not just a beautiful car; it is a symbol of a bygone era of bespoke coachbuilding, where the collaboration between designers and manufacturers produced some of the most iconic and memorable vehicles in automotive history. Today, it remains a highly prized collector’s item, revered for its rarity, design excellence, and the unique story of its creation.
