Autobianchi Primula Coupé (I Serie)

The Autobianchi Primula Coupé built by Touring.

Vehicle Overview

The Autobianchi Primula Coupé 1st series emerged onto the automotive scene in 1964, marking a significant milestone for both Autobianchi and Italian car design. At the time, Autobianchi was already under the umbrella of FIAT, boasting the production of two models: the Bianchina and, starting from 1965, the Stellina, featuring a pioneering fiberglass body. While the iconic Mini had been navigating English roads since 1959 with its innovative transverse engine layout, the Primula stood as Italy’s inaugural front-wheel-drive vehicle. In a strategic move, Autobianchi opted to manufacture the Primula in its Desio plant rather than in Turin, a decision aimed at preventing FIAT from shouldering any potential failure associated with the novel front-wheel-drive system. FIAT’s earlier endeavors with front-wheel-drive had yielded lackluster results, leading to the Topolino’s eventual production with a conventional straight-front-engine, rear-wheel-drive configuration despite its original design intent. However, the Primula defied expectations, proving to be a resounding success. Its innovative design captured the attention of automotive enthusiasts and experts alike. Notably, Touring, renowned for its groundbreaking designs, took the reins in creating the captivating coupé version of the Primula, a venture extensively documented in archival photographs. The initial production of the coupé variant took place at Touring’s facility in Nova Milanese, where meticulous attention to detail and innovative engineering flourished. Autobianchi, meanwhile, focused on assembling the requisite sheet-metal stamping equipment necessary for production. As the project gained momentum and the Primula’s popularity soared, production eventually shifted to the Desio plant. Under the expert guidance and close supervision of Carrozzeria Touring, approximately 2000 Primula Coupé vehicles rolled off the assembly line in Desio. Each vehicle bore the mark of Italian craftsmanship and innovation, a testament to the collaborative efforts of Autobianchi and Touring in bringing this pioneering front-wheel-drive coupé to life. The Autobianchi Primula Coupé 1st series not only symbolized a triumph in automotive engineering but also heralded a new era of Italian design and innovation on the global stage.
