The Fiat 1500 B Berlinetta Touring is a remarkable example of automotive engineering and design from the mid-20th century. Based on the Fiat 1500 chassis, this six-cylinder car was produced by Fiat from 1935 to 1950 and stands out for being one of the first vehicles tested in a wind tunnel. This pioneering effort resulted in a sleek, aerodynamic design that set a new standard for touring cars and debunked the notion that such designs would be unpopular with consumers. Carrozzeria Touring, renowned for their “Superleggera” (super-light) construction technique, built the 6C Berlinetta Superleggera on various iterations of the Fiat 1500 chassis, including the B, C, and D models, between 1935 and 1948. The collaboration between Fiat and Touring yielded a vehicle with exceptional aerodynamic efficiency, combining performance with elegant aesthetics. According to “Touring Superleggera: Giant Among Italian Coachbuilders” by Carlo Felice Bianchi Anderloni and Angelo Tito Anselmi, several prototypes of the Fiat 1500 Touring Berlinetta were produced. These prototypes incorporated various trim and design elements, but the fundamental shape remained consistent. The result was a fluid and elegant coupé that shared the refined lines of Touring’s grand designs for the Alfa Romeo 6C. Despite the innovative design and engineering, the Fiat 1500 B Berlinetta Touring was produced in limited numbers. Today, fewer than a dozen of these cars are known to have survived, making them highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts of classic automobiles. The car’s legacy is a testament to the visionary work of Carrozzeria Touring and the early adoption of aerodynamic principles in automotive design.
